For many years Kazan state university of culture and arts has been a leading scientific center of the Middle Volga region studying some fundamental problems of the world culture, national cultures of the peoples of the Volga region, folklore, library study, social and cultural activities, theater, music and  arts. The university is now one of the leading federal state educational institutions. Research work of teachers and students takes an important place in KazGIK activities, which gives considerable dynamism and new impulses for the university’s improvement and development.
The University has a scientific department, which includes post-graduate courses, publishing department, the Council of young scientists and specialists, students' scientific society, a sociological laboratory and dissertation councils.

In 2007-2008 three following dissertation councils were opened at the university: 24.00.01. Theory and history of culture; 05.25.03. Library science and bibliology; 13.00.05. Theory and organization of welfare activity. For the last 5 years 67 candidate and 1 doctoral thesis were presented in the dissertation councils. In other universities 26 theses of the University professors, including 5 doctors were presented as well. A number of teachers with advanced degrees and creative titles has been significantly increased, so, it is 65.6%.
The work of dissertation councils of  KazGIK is focused on the reproduction of scientific-pedagogical personnel of higher and secondary specialized educational institutions of the Republic of Tatarstan, Chuvashia, Mari El, Udmurtia, Mordovia and Bashkortostan, which train specialists in the social and cultural sphere and are included in the educational area of educational institutions of culture and arts of the Middle Volga region, with Kazan state Institute of culture and arts.

In 2014, four post-graduate courses were opened, the number of post-graduate schools has reached 7 in 2016. It trained more than 90 post-graduate students and assistants trainees. The effectiveness of aspirantury is more than 60%.
The Institute has developed a set of research topics and problems that have been steadily and rapidly implemented in recent years, and they are fundamental and theoretical, scientific and creative. The subjects of research work are relevant and address the most important issues of culture, art and education.
A comparative analysis of the quality of scientific and research activities of the university showed a significant increase in its quantitative and qualitative indicators. For the last five years teachers and post-graduate students have published 92 monographs, 12 textbooks, 185 educational and teaching course books, more than 2,000 articles.
